School Visits

“One of the most rewarding aspects of being an author is the opportunity to work with students. I have discovered that engaging young minds (and sometimes young attention spans) is both challenging and exhilarating. It is my goal that my visits to classrooms are rewarding for everyone. I leave hoping that the students and staff believe in the power of creativity, writing, and most importantly, their dreams!”

Prior to my visit I am always in contact to discuss questions or ideas that you may have. Every child and group of children is unique and your input helps me customize my presentation to the needs, goals and curriculum of your school. Along with a variety of workshop topics, I typically include discussion related to:

-my background

-the inspiration for my stories

-teacher involvement

-the process of creating a story

-original art from my books

-sharing my journals and my love of writing

-rough drafts and sloppy copies

-what it takes to get published: practice and perseverance

-working with an illustrator

-imaginations: We all have one!

-seven things that writer’s do

Details about the Day of the Visit

  •  Three to four presentations per day are acceptable. We will work together to create the best schedule for your school.
  •  Students should be grouped according to age or interest area (i.e. K – 2, or writing workshop, creativity workshop).
  •  Large groups are OK.
  •  Please allow 10 minutes between sessions.
  •  Be sure to allow enough time for me to autograph books.
  •  Each session is approximately 45 – 60 minutes depending upon the group’s age and interest.
  •  You can choose the room for presentations, but no stage please. I like to be close to the children. The smaller the room (music room, media center) the more personal it feels for the kids!
  •  I would like to remain in one room for the entire day and save my time and energy for my presentations rather than moving.

The Equipment Needed for my Visit

I arrive approximately one-half to one hour prior to my first presentation for introductions and set-up.

  •  One long table or two small ones
  •  4 chairs
  •  A microphone for large groups or rooms
